Quizlet is an incredible technological tool to create flashcards for online learning. Nowadays it already has 15 million user-generated flashcard sets for teachers and students to choose from, meanwhile Quizlet allows users to create ‘sets’, customizing for their own needs. The website can be used by all grade levels and in any subject including language arts, math, sciences, etc. Teachers and parents could utilize this technological tool to help their children test what they have learnt in a fascinating way. High graders could also work in collaborating groups to create their own sets, adopting various features to learn, test and play games. After a unique flashcard set was created, it can be shared with friends via facebook, email, or embedded on the classroom website. My tutorial gives a brief overview on how to use the website as a convenient and creative technological tool with an example of Chinese language teaching.
The specific NETS-S standards that could meet by integrating this technology into my classroom include:
1. Creativity and Innovation: Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology to create original works as a means of personal group expression. Students use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues and are able to identify trends and forecast possibilities.
2. Communication and Collaboration: Students use the online environment to work collaboratively to create their own works, interacting and supporting each other to produce original works and solve problems. The students are able to identify and define authentic problems and significant questions for investigation, plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a project, and collect and analyze data to identify solutions and/or make informed decisions.
3. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making: Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources.
4. Technology Operations and Concepts: Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts and operations.
My video provided below gives a brief demonstration of how to incorporate Quizlet in the classroom. I would like to show an easy and fun way to create online flashcards, demonstrating different study and game modes. It not only helps students track of everything they know and do not know with matching, multiple-choice and true-false tests, but also with interesting scatter and race games.
